Castiel listens quietly, and when Michael is done, he remembers what Uriel told him, that Michael hasn’t smiled since Lucifer Fell, not really, and he figures Lucifer stole Michael’s brightness, too.

This looks like it could be a fic where Dean is a destitute singer in the 20’s in a bar called Harvelle’s. Cas is an underpaid journalist told to go undercover and find out if there’s a secret liquor smuggling ring below the bar, because it’s Prohibition times, yeah? So at first he sits at the back and drinks glass after glass of water and watches Dean sing, but over time he becomes a regular face. Ellen and Jo begin to trust him and Cas is invited into their inner circle and sure they’re smuggling liqour, but Cas realises it’s not about that, it’s about getting one over on anyone who tries to tell you how to live your life; whether that’s the cops, the Mob, or the whold goddamn world. There’s a protection racket buying up everyone on Harvelle’s street and Ellen’s husband was shot and killed oh, nearly eight years ago now. Times are shitty for everyone and if you want to drink and be merry and blow off some steam then who the hell has the right to take that away from you? So Cas lets himself get intoxicated for the first time in his life, and falls head over heels for Dean.

But the rest of Cas’ family are cops. And when Cas quits his steady job at the paper to go and work at Harvelle’s, his brothers want to know what the hell is going on in that bar to lure their little brother off his path. And meanwhile Ellen’s little business is doing well— so well that the Mob wants in on their operation, and if Ellen doesn’t cave, they’re going to take it by force.
