Just because Dean’s actions are consistent, doesn’t make them good or defensible.

Yes, Dean’s actions are consistent. He.consistently shows no remorse, no kindness, no leniency, no sense of humanity. The only exceptions he makes are for his brother.

I love Dean, I think he has reasons for what he does, but let’s not excuse what he did in 7x03 by talking about how in character it was.

‘Cause that’s not a defense.

Interesting.

I wouldn’t go so far as to accuse Dean of showing “no humanity”. Most of the tough decisions he has had to make are in regard to “the greater good”, which means sacrificing the things he personally loves for the sake of others, if not the world. Sam has always seen through the eyes of the individual because a lot of the time, his own situation makes him empathise with the persecuted (and we could talk for a while about whether or not that, in itself, is selfish; Sam’s personal need to rescue individuals has cost lives) but Dean has always weighed up the risks and made the call. 9 times out of 10 the call has been stabbing somebody.

But hey, here’s the snag: if Dean had been truly “inhuman”, if he had really been acting solely for the “greater good” he’d have killed the child as well. That’s what John would have done.
